Interviewing and Hiring: Avoid the Hiring Surprise Package

"He interviewed well." Anyone who has ever hired a surprise package will say that about the awful hire. Sadly, it takes only about an hour to choose a bad candidate and it takes months to undo a poor choice. If the candidate interviewed well and you hired a loser, it's because you weren't properly prepared. Stop paying for your mistakes and start producing results that benefit your business. Join us for an interactive session where we will develop job descriptions and interview questions so that you don't end up with a surprise package. You will have an opportunity to practice your skills and get feed-forward from the trainer and your fellow participants.

At the end of this course, you will:

  1. Create job descriptions which include "so that" statements in order to have a purpose for each task and to create measurable outcomes.
  2. Use job descriptions to develop and ask questions relating to bona fide occupational qualifications. (Please bring any job descriptions you have on hand.)
  3. Take appropriate notes without making personal references, and learn why you should never write on a resume.
  4. Appropriately handle interview surprises, such as candidates who provide information that is not job related.
  5. Structure interviews so that they follow a format for comparison.
  6. Avoid illegal questions in hiring and decision making.
  7. Use questions that weed out problem hires.
  8. Structure a 90-day review form so that progress is tracked and the new hire keeps contributing to your business.
  9. Learn how to keep notes on employee performance so that you protect yourself if you do have to terminate someone.
  10. Avoid pitfalls common to hiring candidates whom you know, such as family members and those who may have worked for you in other positions.

TRAINER
Laura Simms is also known as PROFESSORDOCTORMOM, LLC. She spent 30 years in the electrical field, working for two of the world's largest corporations. She managed groups between 12-50 people and has hired over 100 people in her career. She has a master of science in administration from Central Michigan, a bachelor's degree from Wayne State, and her OSHA certification from Eastern Michigan. She's a lifelong Michigander.
